Chichicastenango: A market in the clouds
Chichicastenango is a town that hosts an ancient Mayan market. The town is located in the Guatemalan mountains, twenty miles north of Atitlan Lake, at an altitude of 6,440 feet. The market takes place between two 400-years-old white churches. Twice a week, Mayan people from all over the region travel for miles the day before the market to set up their booths and to prepare for the next day, hoping to sell their merchandise. The town is empty during the rest of the week, but on market day it comes to life, full of colors and people selling everything from flowers to food, stone to fabric.
